Today I am recovering after a very busy weekend. I was cooking and baking a lot just to put together one (ONE) dinner. Was it necessary? Probably not. Was it tasty? Oh yes! Did I enjoyed all the preparation and time I spent in the kitchen? Yes, for most of the time (my swollen ankles tell me otherwise).

We had guests over for dinner and what was nice about this particular couple was that I knew what dishes they would enjoy. And there is no greater pleasure for a cook than to offer people dishes they truly enjoy. So no, I didn’t mind cooking entire weekend at all.

The menu was the following: mushroom soup, sauerkraut and mushroom pierogi, carrot and horseradish salad (recipe soon to come) and for dessert poppy seed cake and pear cornmeal cake with rosemary syrup, my latest favorite.

We had a good time, enjoyed our company and food on the table, everything was cleaned, leftovers packed within a half an hour after our guests left. And after that I was in a deep need of a cup of herbal tea of some sort. Something to help me with my digestion and limited (currently) stomach space. Of course I could be wiser and don’t ask for seconds, I could have chosen just one piece of cake instead of having one of each… I could have… But well, truly, who is thinking about eating right while enjoying a feast? Few people probably. To my defense – vegetables were not scarce on the table. They were just too good.

Anyway, with Holidays approaching quickly and more memorable meals coming I thought it would be a good idea to remind myself and those of you who care 🙂 what does it mean to “eat right” or “healthier”. Eating a bit better each day makes occasional (hmm… two weekends in a row for me) overeating less “criminal” 🙂
